Savannah Sparrow Singing on a Tulip Farm (SOLD)
Savannah Sparrow Singing on a Tulip Farm (SOLD)
Original watercolor on paper. 6x8in. Print reproductions are available up to 8x10in.
In 2022 I became a caretake for my dad after his stroke. This is the only art I was able to do that year aside from the Tulip Festival poster itself. It tells the story of a male Savannah sparrow singing his mating call from a high perch on a fence post. The female sparrow watches and listens in the background. Interestingly, the singing sparrow with its mouth wide open was vetoed by the festival, deemed not cute enough (and thus not sellable) for the poster. Since the sparrow’s relationship to the tulips is exactly that though - to perch on top of a tulip and sing - I felt I needed to capture it once singing. To design the piece, I used photos I took from multiple farms, highways, and backyards in Skagit Valley. This does not represent a particular tulip farm.
